Newcastle University has proudly featured Gustavo Abdiel Aguilar-Miranda, PhD student and founder of I Exist Too, following his recent win of the Best New Initiative at the Honours for Diversity and Inclusion in Maritime 2024. This accolade, awarded at the Brussels Conference on the Wellbeing of Seafarers, highlights the 'I Exist Too' project's pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and rights of LGBTIQ+ individuals within the maritime industry.

I Exist Too was recently awarded the "Honor for the Best Initiative for Diversity and Inclusion in the Maritime Sector 2024" by Herald Ruijters, Deputy Director-General of the Directorate-General for Transport and Mobility of the European Commission. This award celebrates the impactful efforts of the 'I Exist Too, 2023' forum, which addressed the challenges and realities faced by the LGBTQ+ community within the maritime industry.

On International Women's Day, March 8, the Brussels Conference on the Wellbeing of Seafarers celebrated strides in diversity and inclusion within the maritime sector. Highlighting the underrepresentation of women in maritime, the conference featured balanced high-level participation and engaged in critical discussions on enhancing sector diversity. Notably, I Exist Too was honoured with the award for the best new initiative in partnership with the European Commission and the Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association (WISTA). This recognition underscores our ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive environment in the maritime industry.
